1. What is a WAGO wire connector?

A WAGO connector is a wire-splicing component that uses spring pressure to retain the conductor instead of a screw terminal. The best-known example is the orange-lever 221 Series, while the compact 2273 PUSH WIRE® Series is designed for quick solid-conductor splicing in junction boxes. Transparent housings make it easier to inspect insertion. However, the WAGO name does not mean that every connector accepts every wire. Conductor type, cross-section, strip length, temperature and ratings vary by series and exact part number, so the marking and datasheet must be checked first.

2. Key differences between the 221 and 2273 Series

The 221 Series is operated by lifting a lever, inserting the conductor and closing the lever. It supports solid, stranded and fine-stranded conductors within the stated range and is convenient to disconnect. WAGO states that the 4 mm² family accepts fine-stranded conductors from 0.14 to 4 mm² and solid or stranded conductors from 0.2 to 4 mm². The 6 mm² family accepts all conductor types from 0.5 to 6 mm². The 2273 Series is a push-in product for solid conductors; the official range is 0.5 to 2.5 mm². It is very compact and fast, but it should not be chosen for flexible wire unless the exact product is approved for it.

3-4. Protection and Mounting Accessories

A compatible Gelbox protects selected 221 and 2273 connectors from moisture, a 221 Junction Box organizes many splice points, and mounting carriers secure connectors to DIN rail or panels. These accessories do not splice wires themselves, but they can determine the quality and suitability of the completed installation. Any ingress rating applies to the specified complete protective arrangement, not automatically to a bare connector.

4. Advantages of WAGO connectors

First, installation is fast because no screw needs to be loosened and retightened. Second, spring pressure helps maintain a consistent contact when the correct product is installed within specification. Third, the transparent body and lever of the 221 Series make insertion easy to inspect and later disconnection straightforward. Fourth, the 221 Series can join different conductor types and cross-sections when they all fall within the connector’s approved range. Finally, the range includes multiple conductor counts, inline versions and mounting accessories, giving installers useful choices for branching, extension and fixed mounting.

5. Disadvantages and limitations

WAGO connectors can cost more than basic twist connections or low-cost terminals. They must still be protected in a suitable enclosure; moisture, dust, movement and pull forces require appropriate protection and strain relief. WAGO offers compatible Gelbox solutions that provide IPX8 moisture protection for selected 221 and 2273 connectors, but only when the specified combination and instructions are followed. WAGO also states that the 221 Series is not suitable for mixed aluminum-and-copper connections. Aluminum conductors require an approved connector, the specified contact paste where applicable, and compliance with local rules.

6. How to use a 221 lever connector

De-energize the circuit at the panel and verify absence of voltage with an appropriate tester. Strip the insulation to the length marked on the connector, taking care not to nick the copper or cut strands. Lift the lever fully, then insert the exposed conductor straight to the stop. Inspect through the transparent housing: the copper should reach the contact area while excessive insulation should not enter the clamping point. Close the lever completely and perform a gentle pull test. Repeat the visual and pull checks for every conductor, then place the completed splice in a suitable enclosure.

7. How to use a 2273 push-wire connector

Strip an approved solid conductor to the specified length and push it straight into the 2273 connector. The lever-free process is simple, but short stripping or angled insertion may prevent full contact. Inspect conductor position through the housing and perform a gentle pull test. Follow the exact product instructions for removal and reuse; do not force, twist or reuse a damaged connector. If stranded or fine-stranded wire must be connected, change to a product such as an approved 221 Series connector rather than improvising with the 2273.

8. Common installation mistakes

Frequent errors include stripping too little so that the conductor does not reach the contact, or stripping too much and leaving exposed copper. Other problems are forcing flexible wire into a solid-wire 2273, exceeding the connector’s cross-section range, using oxidized or damaged conductors, leaving the splice unenclosed, and expecting the connector to act as cable strain relief. Where movement or pull is possible, provide independent cable retention and strain relief.

9. Best-fit applications

At home, the 221 Series is convenient for lighting replacements, branches inside ceiling junction boxes and wiring that may need future inspection. It is especially useful when a fine-stranded luminaire lead must be joined to a building’s solid conductor, provided both wires fit the selected part’s range. The 2273 is well suited to compact junction-box branching of approved solid conductors. High-current equipment, elevated temperatures, outdoor or wet locations, vehicle vibration and aluminum wiring require separate evaluation of ratings, approvals, enclosure, conductor and local electrical code.

10. Buying checklist

Start with conductor type and cross-section, not simply the connector’s appearance. Select the required conductor count, compare the exact part number on the product and package, and purchase from a reliable distributor. Then assess available box space, moisture, cable pull and future access. When those factors match the product specification, the connector can improve both installation speed and maintainability.

Q. Can a WAGO 221 connector be reused?

The lever allows normal disconnection, but a connector with damage, deformation or signs of overheating should not be reused. Follow the exact part instructions.

Q. Can stranded wire be inserted into a 2273?

The 2273 product family is specified for solid conductors. Choose an approved 221 Series product for stranded or fine-stranded conductors.

Q. Can it be used directly outdoors or in a bathroom?
