Dyson CameraJet explained: the toothbrush that sees and jets between teeth, an interdental liquid

1. What is Dyson CameraJet?

CameraJet is more than a connected toothbrush with a live camera. While sonic motion cleans tooth surfaces and the gumline, the optical system looks for interdental gaps and directs liquid to those locations. In the MyDyson™ app, users can view a live image and coverage map, turning brushing from a mostly tactile routine into something that can also be inspected visually.

Dyson positions brushing and interdental cleaning as one routine of roughly three minutes. CameraJet is not a diagnostic medical device. Anyone with gum disease, pain, bleeding, dental work or ongoing treatment should follow professional dental advice first.

2. Core technology: see, interpret and jet in 0.1 seconds

The 1 mm camera and gap-detection algorithm

A 100,000-pixel macro camera sits immediately below the brush head and analyzes 28 images per second. Dyson says the machine-learning algorithm was trained on about 470,000 dental images to determine the position and direction of interdental gaps. A dome-shaped targeting lens broadens the view, while strobe illumination helps stabilize detail in the dark, wet environment of the mouth.

How is camera privacy handled?

According to Dyson, the camera operates only when needed and a white light indicates when it is active. Live View is streamed directly to the app; images are designed not to be stored on the device, in the app or in the cloud, and are not made accessible to Dyson or third parties. Users should still manage phone-screen privacy, app permissions and home Wi-Fi security.

3. Conical jet and anti-gravity tank

Instead of the narrow needle-like stream used by many water flossers, CameraJet produces a wider cone aimed at a detected gap. Dyson says it can deliver up to 0.15 mL within about 0.1 seconds, covering a broader area at comparatively gentle pressure. This is not mechanically identical to contact floss, so users should not stop a dentist-recommended floss or interdental-brush routine without advice.

Inside the handle, an expanding silicone membrane, diaphragm pump and pressure chamber reduce air pockets when the handle is tilted. The three jet modes are Brush + Auto-jet, Brush + Manual-jet and Auto-jet only.

4. Brushing system and selectable modes

The sonic motor produces 245 three-dimensional oscillations per second. Softer outer bristles follow the gumline while firmer inner bristles work on the tooth surface and staining. Brushing intensity can be set to Gentle, Multi-directional oscillation or Deep clean. Haptic feedback alerts the user when excess pressure or poor technique is detected.

5. How to use it

29.  Fill the handle tank with water or mouthrinse, either manually or through the refill dock.

30.  Apply a small amount of low-foaming gel toothpaste; an SLS-free formula helps preserve camera visibility.

31.  Choose the jet mode and brushing intensity, then press the power button.

32.  Hold the head roughly horizontal to the teeth and move slowly from one tooth to the next.

33.  In Auto-jet mode, keep the lips gently closed to reduce splashing and lean forward when draining liquid.

34.  After use, rinse the detached head and tank, hold the jet button until liquid stops, rinse the handle and air-dry it.

Moving too quickly can give the camera less time to identify each gap. Early hands-on reviewers describe a learning curve and note that the jet can splash the mirror if the mouth is left too open.

6. Dock, battery, water resistance and consumables

The 3-in-1 dock stores and charges the handle and refills its approximately 12.5 mL tank. Dyson describes a refill time of about three seconds. Korean specifications state up to 14 cleaning sessions per charge, or up to ten days when used once daily in Gentle and Brush + Auto-jet modes. Actual endurance will vary with intensity, jet use and Live View.

The handle is rated IPX7, but that does not mean the powered refill dock should be submerged. An RFID tag tracks brush-head use and helps remind the user to replace the head at around three months. Dyson’s low-foaming oral-care products are optimized for camera visibility, although compatible third-party products meeting the guidance may also be used.

7. What the MyDyson app adds

With 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, the app can display the live camera view, guided brushing, a cleaning-coverage map, history and personalized insights. The view may be useful for hard-to-see rear surfaces, but users should avoid holding the brush against one spot for too long while concentrating on the screen. App features can vary by country or region.

It may be excessive for anyone who prefers a light, simple toothbrush, has no intention of using the app, or is sensitive to continuing costs. If a conventional electric toothbrush plus daily floss is already working well, the additional value may not justify the price.

Q. Does CameraJet completely replace dental floss?

The conical jet supports interdental plaque management, but it works differently from contact floss. Needs vary with gum condition, restorations, implants and orthodontics, so follow dental advice.

Q. Are camera images stored or sent to Dyson?

Dyson says Live View is streamed directly to the app and is not stored on the product, in the app or in the cloud, nor shared with third parties.

Q. Can I use ordinary toothpaste and mouthrinse?

Conclusion

CameraJet’s real distinction is not merely placing a camera on a toothbrush; the camera decides where and when the liquid jet should fire. Combining brushing and targeted interdental cleaning, then showing missed areas in an app, is genuinely novel. The trade-offs are equally clear: a very high price, a larger handle, splash-prone technique, a learning curve and continuing consumable costs. Its value depends less on spectacle than on whether the owner will use the guided features and build a more consistent interdental-cleaning habit.
